One in ten Americans has experienced pain every day for the last three months, yet only 23% of those individuals have found opioids effective in treating their symptoms. The data is clear – prescription pain killers don’t work. Could an all natural alternative like CBD oil turn things around? Promising research using CBD oil is being done, and some experts think CBD oil could help solve America’s opioid epidemic.
America’s Chronic Pain Problem
Did you know that chronic pain is the number one cause of disability in the United States? From migraines and lower back pain to sore necks and slipped discs, a 2011 study found that over 100 million Americans suffer from persistent pain. These pain problems lead to more than $6 billion in lost productivity and medical treatments each year.
By The Numbers: America’s Opioid Epidemic
Since the 1920s, doctors have relied on prescription opioids like Vicodin, Percocet, and Fentanyl to treat patients suffering from chronic pain. These drugs are manufactured to address physical discomfort, but they are also highly addictive. A 2015 study by the American Society of Addiction Medicine found that 2 million Americans “had a substance use disorder involving prescription pain relievers.”
The same study noted, “drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 52,404 lethal drug overdoses in 2015“. Sadly, in the two years since that study was published, the numbers have continued to rise. The White House has even declared an Opioid State of Emergency.
CBD Oil and the endocannabinoid system
Opioids rewire the brain’s pain receptors causing mental and physical addiction, but CBD oil works differently. The hemp plant is the only known botanical that interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system the part of the human body tasked with homeostasis or general well-being.
Imagine the endocannabinoid system like you would the computer of your car. Your car’s computer keeps things running smoothly, but if something goes wrong it can negatively impact your steering, your mileage, or even the battery. If your car has a malfunctioning sensor, you can replace the sensor, but if the real problem is the computer’s hard drive, you’re only addressing the symptom and not the actual cause. Opioids only address the pain centers in your brain, while CBD oil traces the root of the problem, directly impacting your neurotransmitters.
Here’s an overview of some recent studies displaying the effectiveness of CBD oil in treating chronic pain:
▪ In 2008, a review found that CBD oil “was effective in overall pain management without adverse side effects.” The same review “also noted that CBD was beneficial in treating insomnia related to chronic pain.“
▪ In 2016, scientists performed tests on arthritic rats, concluding that “Transdermal CBD gel significantly reduced joint swelling, limb posture scores as a rating of spontaneous pain, immune cell infiltration and thickening of the synovial membrane in a dose-dependent manner.“
▪ Cancer patients are using CBD oil to treat the pain and symptoms of regimens like radiation and chemotherapy.
▪ The U.S. government notes that “CBD is very good at calming over-excited nerves and “study demonstrated that endogenous cannabinoid system signaling is likely to provide intrinsic protection against colonic inflammation and cannabinoids may also contribute to pain modulation through an anti-inflammatory mechanism.”
CBD Oil as a possible alternative for Chronic Pain Relief
If you have been using prescription drugs to fight back against chronic pain, you may want to talk to your doctor to see if CBD might be a better alternative than opioids. It’s an all-natural product derived from the cannabis plant, it isn’t addictive, and side effects are minimal.
CBD may yet prove to be the best way to counter opioid addiction.
